Sideways, and huge pictures

Ok, so I have managed to re-size each picture to under 500k but when I upload them and preview they come out sideways and huge. I even tried to rotate the pictures, then re-save but they still came out sideways. Do y'all use a certain editing tool to size and edit pics before posting? I searched posts and couldnt find any solution. Thanks for your help!
