My daughter is on the spectrum, high functioning, but it causes major behavioral issues. She also has a food dye intolerance as well as gluten,both causing major behavioral issues when consumed. We deal with anxiety, aggression, defiance, the list is very very long. Recently I came across an article saying kava as well as skullcap (American) is Rx'd in other countries to minors for Autism, anxiety, and ADHD/ADD with success. I also ran across some research suggesting that kava is very effective for these disorders.

I'm curious though if any of you have had any personal experience regarding these problems specifically and whether kava was a viable option for you or someone you know? Has anyone here used it for this specifically? How did it work out? What does would you recommend starting with for a minor? How did you get them to take it? I'm grasping at straws here, overwhelmed, stressed, and have to help her! We can't go on like this. Mainstreams solution is to heavily drug her with pharmaceuticals, which I am very much against! There has to be a better way. A natural way that doesn't turn her into a zombie. That is just not a solution in my opinion. All advice very much welcome I'm desperately needing answers and a clear cut path forward. Thanks in advance for your time and understanding

I find those two to be roughly similar in how they affect me, with the Kava having a bit more of an ebullient affect. Try them for yourself. I need to reorder soon from In Sense Botanicals the Skullcap powder they sell, it's a good deal. But I'm guessing that you'll want capsules.

Passion Flower, Lemon Balm, Valerian Root, and Magnolia bark, when taken as extracts, can also help in inducing a peaceful feeling. I use those at times well.

On a hunch I did a quick search regarding Lithium Orotate, it's OTC (I buy mine from Amazon), and is pretty cheap while often providing the reduction in feeling aggravated that people are looking for. It might also provide other neurological benefits.

I'm not trying to be funny when I suggest that given your levels of stress in managing things, all of the above could also benefit both of you, and if you were trying them now and again, you'd probably feel more comfortable in trying them with your child.

Less is more, and allow for the effects to build up over time, especially with the Lithium Orotate.

Funny enough, municipalities with significantly higher than average levels of Lithium in their water supply report lower than average incidences of violence.

Using data for 27 Texas counties from 1978-1987, it is shown that the incidence rates of suicide, homicide, and rape are significantly higher in counties whose drinking water supplies contain little or no lithium than in counties with water lithium levels ranging from 70-170 micrograms/L; the differences remain statistically significant (p less than 0.01) after corrections for population density. The corresponding associations with the incidence rates of robbery, burglary, and theft were statistically significant with p less than 0.05. These results suggest that lithium has moderating effects on suicidal and violent criminal behavior at levels that may be encountered in municipal water supplies.
