Morel mushrooms hunters,it's that time!

Post by Oletimer »

Here in the Midwest it's that time of the year, ,morels are popping up! You have to have a keen eye to spot them in the woods,,but when you find one, there's more around, its like a treasure hunt,,they only come once a year,, a friend posted on Facebook her find,150!! They say this year will be epic ,,nothing taste as good as a morel mushroom, ,some people hunt them to sell, 40$ a pound,,,I can't hunt for them like I use to,lots of hilly wooded places, creekbeds, ,there is a flat wooded lot down the road I can hunt,,last year I found about 70 in a weeks time,,I had morel fever today, walked down the road, but didn't find any,,if there's any morel hunters out there, have you had any luck yet??

Out here in Colorado it's slim pickin's and the season doesn't start until next month. I can't wait though! So much fun! My Dad who lives back in Ohio sometimes goes out for a day an comes back with sacks full. I'm lucky to get a dozen in an entire season. They are so delicious but the best part about them is the hunt :D

Aren't there dogs or pigs trained to sniff these out? I could have sworn I read that somewhere.

Yes!! Pot belly pigs ,if you have one,,are supposed to be very helpful ,they can sniff them out,,,you have to have a keen eye,,once you find one,it's easier to spot them,,, here in the Midwest it's a delicacy, wherever may apple plants are,,usually there are morels,,,the red morels are good, but some people are allergic to them,,they call them false morels,, rather than risk getting sick,,most people leave them alone,,, :o

It's been raining here, and supposed to warm up this weekend, ,prime hunting time,,I am going to take my grandkids with me to hunt they are closer to the ground,,spot them easier than me,,I have a "honey hole" where I have always found them every year, but I think the neighbors found out my secret, that's why no one tells you exactly where they find all the mushrooms

I'm in Iowa. I wonder if they grow around here and if I could go hunting for them. Might be a fun activity to plan for a weekend. Camping and morel hunting. Now that I think about it, I'm not sure if I've ever actually eaten one.

I've found and picked exactly ONE morel in my life.

But that's ok but I do not like mushrooms.

I love mushrooms, especially with Swiss cheese. My favorite burger is mushroom Swiss. My favorite omelette is mushroom Swiss. I could literally just eat mushrooms with melted Swiss. Sooooo good. There’s something about that flavor combination. Now I’m getting hungry...

Yes, that is a good combo. When the kids were younger and I was still cooking for everyone, I'd make mushroom swiss burgers for my son and his dad. Or mushroom anything for dad. I like cooking them, I will not eat them. :|

They have morel festival once a year up north of lake of the OZARKS, ,
The way to eat them is dipped in flour and a few spices,,deep fried or pan fried in butter,,if we have a big batch,,they mushrooms are the main meal,no meat,,,,I can't explain the taste, but once you try one,,omg,,nothing can replace it,,they don't taste like regular mushrooms, ,that's why morel fever runs rampant this time of year,,happy hunting! !

I love Morels! But I moved away from the Midwest for work and they don’t grow here. I remember taking bread sacks out as a kid and coming back clear full. Both sides of the sink would be filled with halved mushrooms and salt water. Mmm boy
