How do I catch a stray dog?

Lonely looking dog covers a territory which includes my apt. complex. Seen by many, he doesn't come too close to people. A bunch of us on NextDoor.com want to adopt him, but we have to catch him first!
Any tips? Medium-large size, used to people, he came w/in 10 feet of me and my mom. He's a little skinny, but people report leaving food for him. He'll watch and sometimes follow people walking their dogs.
