Xylitol Organic Crystal Powder as an aid in dealing with constipation

Post by Babel-17 »

It has numerous benefits as a result of its interesting chemistry from being a sugar alcohol, and like Magnesium Citrate, it reliably causes ones intestines to absorb water, and thus it aids in speeding up the transit of material through them. It also promotes motilin secretion, and motilin aids the process of digestion and elimination.
The main function of motilin is to increase the migrating myoelectric complex component of gastrointestinal motility and stimulate the production of pepsin. Motilin is also called "housekeeper of the gut" because it improves peristalsis in the small intestine and clears out the gut to prepare for the next meal.[9] A high level of motilin secreted between meals into the blood stimulates the contraction of the fundus and antrum and accelerates gastric emptying. It then contracts the gallbladder and increases the squeeze pressure of the lower esophageal sphincter. Other functions of motilin include increasing the release of pancreatic polypeptide and somatostatin.
One or two teaspoons in a cup of beverage should be all anyone might need. It's mild, but definitively effective, so be prepared. I'd recommend starting very slowly, with just a half teaspoon or so, and taking that at night.

Adverse effects
Humans

Xylitol has no known toxicity in humans.[15] When ingested at high doses, xylitol and other polyols may cause gastrointestinal discomfort, including flatulence, diarrhea, and irritable bowel syndrome (see #metabolism above); some people experience the adverse effects at lower doses.[15][35] Xylitol has a lower laxation threshold than some sugar alcohols but is more easily tolerated than mannitol and sorbitol.[36]

Increased xylitol consumption can increase oxalate, calcium, and phosphate excretion to urine (termed oxaluria, calciuria, and phosphaturia, respectively). These are known risk factors for kidney stone disease, but despite that, xylitol has not been linked to kidney disease in humans.[37]

Dogs and other animals

Xylitol poisons dogs. Ingesting 100 milligrams of xylitol per kilogram of body weight (mg/kg bw) causes dogs to experience a dose-dependent insulin release; depending on the dose it can result in life-threatening hypoglycemia. Hypoglycemic symptoms of xylitol toxicity may arise as quickly as 30 to 60 minutes after ingestion. Vomiting is a common first symptom, which can be followed by tiredness and ataxia. At doses above 500 mg/kg bw, liver failure is likely and may result in coagulopathies like disseminated intravascular coagulation.[38]

Xylitol is safe for cats,[39] rhesus macaques, horses, and rats.[38] Cats even tolerate ingesting xylitol doses of 1000 mg/kg bw.
I buy mine at Amazon, six pounds of Organic Xylitol for $31.95. I use it in my coffee, and it can be almost too effective. I'm going to start using just one teaspoon of it, and then use a bit of Stevia to get my coffee as sweet as I prefer it to be.
