Horrible recurring nightmare

As many of you know, Mei, my service dog, had to be put down in January 2021.

For the past few weeks I sometimes have a dream which starts out as a variety of normal dreams, I don't remember much, but all of a sudden I'll remember my dog isn't present. WTF happened? Where is she? Where did she go? How come I didn't notice she wasn't here????? I can't remember so my mind starts spinning out scenarios: dead, lost, car hit her? My mom is there and seems to know what happened; I demand to know. I realize I had been neglecting her and she is gone, the how differs each time, but my heart is torn at losing her and because I didn't realize she was even gone.

Ai-yah.

I had something really similar happen to me when I lost my ESA rottie to cancer back in 2013. Can we talk about it privately?

After my dog passed a few years back, I had bad dreams about losing her and then not being able to find her too. I believe these dreams are part of the grief process and your brain processing the loss. I had similar dreams after my sister passed in 2012.

One day I had a dream in which my dog showed up in the dream with my sister. They were both standing in this large bubble of purple light. As I started walking towards it, my sister said "I have her, she is safe." Then it disappeared and I woke up.

I know it was just a dream, but it gave me some closure and peace that I needed about both losses.
