Long story short I was a toss and washer for 1 month straight, until digestive issues have made me swear off this method (constipation, gas, upset stomach, vomitting etc) and try the tea method. I've read many tutorials and watched various youtube videos on tea making but really liked this archieved reddit post on making Kratom tea with an aeropress.

Can someone please kindly read what I'm doing specifically below and offer any advice?

I mix my kratom powder (I put in about 2 teaspoons since I used to do 1 teaspoon daily, my goals is to make 2 servings to drink ) with lemon juice (I put a like 6 teaspoons of lemon juice so a 3 to 1 ratio lemon juice to kratom powder) and also throw in a 2 teaspoons of unrefined coconut oil.(supposedly another potentiater and helps the effects of kratom tea to last longer) Once that is mixed up I let it sit for 10 minutes or so then I dump it into my tea kettle (Cuisinart CPK-17AMZ) and add the minimum amount of water (about 12 ounces) and set it to the preset temperature of 175 and let it keep warm for 30 minutes, then I wait another 30 minutes letting it seep and cool down.

Anyhow I followed the instructions in the link above for the Kratom Tea aeropress instructions but when it came time to actually use the aeropress I usually have a hard time pushing down on it, not sure if my aeropress is faulty but eventually when I'm able to press down it starts making a hissing noise and or leaks from the sides. Further making this a fail for me is that the kratom powder sediment seeps through and this is because the paper filters that came with the aeropress usually come dislodged when I press down too hard/and it makes that hissing noise or the liquid squirts out of the sides. I double checked to make sure I had the black filter cap screwed in tightly and correctly, and also that the paper filter was placed properly etc. If I press down very lightly for the first 2 inches or so I get the clear kratom tea free of sludge that I so desire but the problem is at this point it won't let me push down any further and then of course once I do apply more pressure the hissing noise comes on and or the sediment seeps through because the paper filter becomes dislodged from the pressure etc and the liquid squirts from the sides. I ordered a mesh filter off amazon for my aeropress so Im going to use that and place that on top of the paper filter to hopefully keep it in place. some guy guy made a 50 second video on a method similar to the one referenced above but again not sure if its bc my kratom powder is too fine but I can't push down on the aeropress without an extremely high amount of pressure and thus the above issues. If anyone has any suggestions I'd really appreciate it! For now Im basically just pouring my brewed kratom tea over a melitta #2 brown filter and the filtering cup attachment over a mug, but this takes forever as you can imagine and I'd really like to utilize the aeropress method that was kindly explained and have the clear kratom tea free of most of or all sediment because my stomach can't handle this plant matter at all.

Other options are maybe using a coffee maker, putting the kratom powder in a tea bag and letting it sit in water? I realize it's probably better to use actual kratom leaf for tea but my preferred kratom vendors (socal/hippo) don't sell leaf. I really miss the toss and wash method but simply can't due to my sensitive stomach and hoping to find a tea method that provides as strong of effects but I simply can't handle any of the actual plant matter. Any suggestions or advise would really be appreciated!

In another post elsewhere he mentions that he gets a small amount of sediment in the cup but sludge and debris are filtered out.

Welcome, Kratom77, and thanks for that Aeropress tutorial -- I had not seen it before!

My thought on the subject is that as far as potency goes, the mechanical means of filtering out the solids (Aeropress, French press, paper filter, metal filter, mesh filter bag, etc) doesn't make nearly as much of a difference as other variables. So to me you're doing just as well with your Melitta filter as you are with the Aeropress. A filter bag doesn't take as long -- I use these -- but it's messy, you still get a tiny bit of powder, and you have to wash it for reuse the next time, so you might as well stick with the Melitta OR pick up one of the House Again metal strainers Blends mentioned above.

Also, in my own experience the longer you boil kratom, the weaker the tea gets, so now I only ever brew it like I would a regular cup of tea: boil water, sling it over the kratom, wait a couple minutes, and filter. So while people do let it simmer for 30-45 minutes like you do, you may want to try a much shorter boil, at least once just to see if it makes a difference for you personally. You can do the tea bag as you suggested, but I personally believe you will get better results, especially out of powder, by letting it freely circulate in the water and filtering as you are now, even though it's a huge pain in the ass.

Your use of lemon juice is excellent: you -really- want that acid to help extract the alkaloids, especially on a shorter brew. Some people don't notice a difference, but I always did.

I have also found that tea requires more kratom to make an equivalent dose to toss & wash, especially when I am making it with powder. So if your uncooked dose was two teaspoons to make a double dose, when you're making tea add a bit. Round your teaspoonfuls, or just add a third, and test it by drinking a bit less than you normally would. You can always dilute it if need be, but I don't think you will need to.

You can also make more than two doses ahead of time; kratom tea stays really fresh for about three or four days in the fridge, so if tea is all you can work with because of stomach issues, at least you don't have to do it more than twice a week. It can be reheated and the coconut oil added just before you drink it. You could also freeze your kratom tea into ice cubes and it would keep at least a couple months in an airtight bag, probably much longer. This may also help you rotate strains, if you brew up different strains and keep the frozen cubes in separate, labeled freezer bags.

That, and PLEASE get a scale. This is the one I use daily and love, and it's under $10 at Amazon. When it comes to kratom, a teaspoon is not the same across strains and vendors. It's okay to start off with, but if you really want to get the most out of your leaf, start weighing it. I winged it with teaspoons for three months before I broke down and got a scale, and the difference is night and day. I literally cannot recommend one enough. The differences in density, grind and potency across strains really make it worth the effort.
