12/22/18 Tsunami hits Indonesia

Post by beathappening »

Just saw this before bed...another one :(

https://www.cnn.com/2018/12/22/asia/dea ... index.html

At least 168 people have been killed and another 745 injured after a tsunami hit the coastline of west Java and Sumatra, Indonesia on Saturday.

There was no warning before the waves struck the Pandeglang district, Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, head of public relations at Indonesia's National Disaster Mitigation Agency, said on television.

The tsunami was likely triggered by a combination of underwater landslides caused by volcanic eruption, the country's meteorological, climatological and geological agency said.

The confirmed dead included a member of the Indonesian rock band Seventeen that was playing when the disaster struck as well as a road member, according to the Indonesian newspaper the Jakarta Post. The newspaper said all the other band members were still missing. This was caught on tape.

Even though Indonesia was the worst country affected by the devastating Boxing Day 2004 tsunami that killed hundred of thousands of people, the country still lacks the proper equipment to alert that a tsunami threat is coming.

"This is new thing for us," Nugroho said, adding that Indonesia needs underwater sensors that would warn authorities of possible dangers.

"We need multi-hazard early warning system," he said. "And we need lots of it."

Nugroho pointed out that tsunamis are much faster and less predictable than tidal waves, which are caused by atmospheric conditions.

"We used to know that a tsunami happens after an earthquake. There was no quake last night. That is why there was no warning," he said referring to the underwater landslides.

The tsunami has destroyed 558 houses and heavily damaged nine hotels, 60 restaurants and 350 boats, indicating the tsunami hit residential and tourist areas.

Nugroho said, as of now, no foreigners were killed. The dead include only Indonesian tourists and locals.

"We are still gathering information," Nugroho said. "The worst hit area is Pandeglang district, along the coastal area, including residential and tourist areas in the Tanjung Lesung beach, Lesung beach, Teluk Lada, Panimbang and Carita beach."

How tragic. Those poor people. Let's hope that number stays around 168, most often the death toll rises dramatically after such an event. Very sad.

Just reading about it. I wonder who is supposed to pay for "lots of sensors" for thier country....

Stuff is starting to come out:
Band members who were still missing were bass and drum players, and also the wife of the band's vocalist was still missing, while the other band members survived, suffered injuries such as a broken leg. The band's vocalist survived after being in the ocean for two hours. (sorry for bad English)

The latest news of the "seventeen" band hit by the tsunami:

Bani (Bassist) Passed Away.
Oki (Road Manager) Passed Away.
Jarot (Crew) survived.
Jack (Additional Player) survived.
Andi (Drummer) still missing.
Herman (guitarist) still missing.
Ujang (Crew) still missing.

Dylan (Ifan's wife) reports from local residents she survived but has not met directly with Ifan (vocalist).
sorry for bad English."

168 so far

Saw this too:
this tsunami is almost to the day
14 years since the Christmas Quake/Tsunami which hit
Sumatra and killed over 240,000 people around the Pacific
Rim

The 2004 Quake
was proven to have been caused by one of the most powerful
gamma ray bursts ever recorded to that date. Then yesterday
and the day before this week's Sumatra Tsunami we had TWO
very powerful gamma ray bursts. One from Constellation
"Hydra" and the other from "Norma." The graphics shown at
the link below show them to be fairly long-term GRBs as
GRBs are measured in milli-seconds.

But who knows?
They are saying there could be more events too

That is some real conspiracy theorist stuff there at the end.

It's been a tough year for the Indonesians. Sure hope they get some relief and rebuild.

More terrible news for Indonesia ... what can we do. Support Indo kratom I guess, but also, America should HELP them !! I guarantee if you pencil out the $$ we are spending "helping" Syria and Afghanistan, Africa and elsewhere .. More $ should be shifted to Indonesia. Through the U.N. as I'm sure there is a Relief Fund there.

Long Term .. they NEED an Early Warning System for tsunami, I live on West Coast USA, Oregon & Washington State, and we DO have a tsunami Early Warning up and down the coast. They do preduct a major earthquake will hit West Coast sometime over the next 50 years... but the many islands of Indonesia seem in very bad position, for natural disasters.. Something must be done!!

The last time they got a warning, thier gov cancelled it.

They can afford a bouy system or being on an existing one.

Thier country just has its own ideas and if they wanted the un to buy it, they'd ask.
Most countries look at the un as a pain you can't ever get rid of, who comes and makes a mess of things serving itself and couldn't care less about "people", just financing trying to pull thier communist world power joke.
Ask the africans, un isnt like people think. Big giant "red cross".

I actually think a bunch of indo is connected to a bouy system over there? I think this might have been on an unprotected part? Not sure....

When hawaii went off it was in time with that planetary alignment that I think is still on? They have been matching volcano/quake activity to solar and celestial, however much influence they have. It used to be just tides.
I think the magnetosphere being weak and moving is attributed with part of it too. If the field was stronger, the nutrino blasts wouldn't affect us as much?

Nah, gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) can't cause tsunamis; earthquakes and landslides cause tsunamis. GRBs don't cause earthquakes or landslides either.

GRBs are showers of extremely high-energy particles (gamma-rays) caused by cataclysmic events in the universe (supernovas, neutron star collisions, other crazy shit). They are mainly detected by specialized satellites in earth's orbit, and they are detected at a rate of about one per day. I don't doubt that a GRB was detected on the day of the tsunami, but it certainly didn't cause it.

Even though the particles are high-energy, we're still talking about unfathomably tiny photons. Nearly all gamma-rays smash into air molecules high in the atmosphere and never make it to earth's surface.

All GRBs detected so far have been from other galaxies, usually millions of light-years away. At that distance, the impact on earth is minimal. It is thought that a GRB originating in the Milky Way could potentially have catastrophic effects on earth, but not in the form of earthquakes, tsunamis, and the like. Basically the gamma-rays could destroy the ozone layer, exposing life on earth to harmful radiation for years to follow and leading to mass extinctions. There's some evidence that this happened at least once in earth's history, but I can't remember which extinction event it was. So even if a GRB did damage earth, it would be less obvious than a tsunami.
