The Resident Evil movie franchise... wow.

Post by broccolibear »

Over the last few weeks, I've taken the time to watch all 6 Resident Evil films with a small group of friends, and I gotta say, this has to be the weirdest series I've ever seen. It's astonishing that it even exists. The first movie is pretty good, not particularly great, but it tells a decent little story that works as a standalone concept, and is kinda neat for fans of the games. The second one is less of a horror movie and more action, but it also is pretty good. It expands the universe further and we get some tie ins with the games. Not great, but pretty good, very entertaining and can be funny. The third one is like... okay, now it's post-apocalyptic wasteland with zombies and psychic powers. A little off the rails from the source material, but it at least kind of makes sense and has some consistency. Starting at the fourth one, the series just keeps getting more and more ludicrous. EVERY TIME, we get introduced to a whole new cast of characters and there is a build up to some big cliff hanger, then pretty much all the characters are never seen again and the whole plot from the previous movie is scrapped and explained away with a line or two of dialogue. There are plot holes and contradictions and inconsistencies in like every line. Nothing makes any sense. I truly can't wrap my head around it. Plus, the effects look cheesier and cheesier in each subsequent movie, and the shooting keeps getting more and more erratic. It's borderline unwatchable by the last movie, it genuinely can give people headaches.

I heard that these movies were pretty bad, but wow, I'm speechless. Honestly though, they were extremely enjoyable to watch. I had a smile on my face from start to finish and almost died of laughter numerous times. Maybe that's what they were going for? Just stringing together as much badass nonsense as possible with no regard for what came before or what's coming next. I can dig that.

The only redeeming quality of the resident evil movies is Ali Larter (my #1 celebrity crush).

Oh man they were so bad lol. I didn’t even watch the last couple. I did love the first when I was younger but I rewatched it a few years ago and realized how not so great that one was either.

What blows my mind is how much money it cost and how much it made, plus Mila Jovovich wanting to make all the sequels.

I liked the music in those movies, and they're mostly fun for somewhat mindless action. Some of them are better than others, but they all have a scene or two that make it worth it, I mean if you like the trailer, then you will like the movie, it's that simple in this case ha-ha. :)

Milla's husband, Paul W. S. Anderson, directed some of the films, and their daughter, Ever Anderson, played the Red Queen in the final one. He also directed Milla in The Three Musketeers. Personally, Soldier, starring Kurt Russel, written by David Webb Peoples of Blade Runner fame, is my favorite one of Anderson's given its sly relationship to the Blade Runner Universe, and Kurt Russel's performance which elevated it to a cut above standard genre fare.

For Milla as Action Hero, then I look to her film which Kurt Wimmer (Equilibrium) wrote and directed, Ultraviolet, where he adapted his "gun katas" so as to compliment Milla's more fluid style, vs. Christian Bale's insane level of dominance over everyone who got in his way. Though while even the Director's Cut shows that the budget (some weird financing) held this one back (the studio cut is worse), the action sequences were cool.

Milla the comic cut up is on display in the film Dummy. "Yo slut!" lol.

She's actually an accomplished singer, you can download a lot of her stuff for free at her website. She had an album when she was just 17 or so.
