Kratom--medical vs recreational use?
Though I have done ZERO research to back this up, I'd wager that out of everyone who who smokes cannabis, 90% use it purely for recreational purposes, i.e, they just like to get high.
For those experienced users who have been in the kratom community for a lengthy period of time, what would be your guess as to the percentage of people who use kratom for recreational purposes versus those who use it purely as an alternative to other opiates (legal or otherwise), for pain relief, to treat insomnia, help with depression or anxiety issues, etc.?

For kratom I think it's the opposite. 90% use it for pain relief, psychological issues, quitting/staying off alcohol or drugs. Less than 10% use it as a "legal high".

I don't care?
As an American, its none of my business?
People being sick aren't any more entitled to coffee and if we let resort-to arguments enter in, it will derail everything off into complicated terms when it needs to be kept as simple as possible. Or they will take advantage.
Nobody wants to spend thier day listening to need claims for a kratom paper and they shouldn't be allowed to or we end up the same place as pot cards. Shouldn't need a card or dam gaurdian for coffee, flour, sugar, tobacco, liquor or pot. As far as I'm concerned, opium is "peoples own business" too and if it wasn't for heroin, it likely would be.
I am fighting off a lethal ra. I can take a blood test and say "Now gimmee my hydro". Don't want it? Don't need it.
But if I "testify" (to try and serve-my-self) about how bad off I am and "get high people are ruining it!" Not only am I a hypocrite but i set up the argument "See? SICK people need it. Its a drug! Schedule!" No. We don't need 6 disability and disease activism causes filing cases all over, they need to work together for the larger cause and not be myopic or self centered.
Nobody wants to fight this like a dramatic 60s pot case either. They want to attack it along the same lines but forget all petty legislation and go for the throat of the fundamental issue so we don't hear about scheduling elderberries next, because it one big show.
Now everyone is sorry about sick people, but there doesn't have to be anything sick about people to use kratom ad lib or it would scream when they touched it.
There is no law against "pleasure" or "happiness" its just a barbarous human fixation of jealousy or resentment that does not have a lot of logic or justification to it.

Re: Kratom--medical vs recreational use?
I asked the question simply out of curiosity and for no other reason.
That said, I have strong libertarian-leanings, and in my opinion that people should have as much personal freedom as possible. For that reason alone I'm against drug laws, but even if I were not, I think treating drug use and/or addiction as a healthcare issue instead of making it a legal issue & jailing people for using drugs would be exponentially more effective and less expensive.
Clearly kratom should remain legal for whatever purpose one wants to use it for.

You're "enlightened well meaning"
Which is not the polar opposite of realistic workable.
Its a likely outcome, because people today are resistant of "letting the world run itself" with that.
Drug use would alter, people balance out, but a % would quickly die if we returned straight to personal responciblility.
So your plan is the step-to society's ability to cope with the way "it always has been" because people are so out of kilter now, straight "the best way" would kill an awful lot more than it would a "more collected and together" people. Right now lots have forgotten "well" is the natural state and 17 year old people on disability for "psychological" diagnosises that only serve the industry. Its literally a tactic called "disease ownership" and the hook in it is not the legitimacy of disability, its the conditioning that "more pitiful is better. Do that" which would make a bunch of organ failures and ods just blindly following thier accepted conditioning.
The lifers and hardcores of old were tough people. Physically strong and mentally stronger. They were survivors......which allowed them to. They were def not like our crying helpless butterflies of today. Thier whole body and attitude towards life, gov, reality, dope and society was completely different.
Thats why I have backed off "can't avoid personal responcibility, even if its gnarly at first" to lean toward this treatment philosophy (one last time...) if it is the step-to which gets gov out and unburdens society in the next phase.
BUT treatment has to change from an "i know honey" milking machine, where they are still doing "cow chutes" (bunch of nothing) so they're billable, to old time assessment, education and coping tools instead of sugar coated dependency ones.
Everybody should get what "my lord" does on admission: Personality inventory, aptitude test and the regular tests that rule out brain damage and hard psychosis (not sjw imaginary psychosis. A stick fixes that) that way the person learns a lot about thier self that is very helpful and walks away clearer minded with better self esteem and real tools, ideas and coping mechanisms, not just psychologically set up and directed to the next exploited cow child's activity, that is billable.
The (actual) treatment scheme now is a visible, doable, linear 2 step path to a more integral societal place and personal responcibility that serious adults can consider.

Re: Kratom--medical vs recreational use?
I use it for energy and minor aches and pains related to work. I buy it for my mom because she has limited access to pain medication. She's old and in bad shape. Kratom has got me off energy drinks completely. I was drinking enough caffeine to kill an elephant. I was up to almost 1000 mg a day. They were making me fat. Not only am I rockstar free but I'm losing weight also.
