NAC (N-ACETYL CYSTEINE) -- Does it kill euphoria?

Post by brassy »

Hi everybody. I take 1200 mg a day of NAC and it makes a huge difference in terms of how well I am able to breathe and fall asleep. It also seems to help with focus (although that may simply be because it has antidepressant effects in some people).
I am just wondering if anybody else here takes it on a daily basis?
There have been quite a lot of anecdotal posts on Reddit saying that it kills the Kratom euphoria. Meanwhile, there have been a few references here at Double M, indicating the reverse, saying NAC is a potentiator.
Please share your own observations.
Mine are useless unfortunately, since I rarely ever experience euphoria with Kratom -- just the painkilling qualities, increased focus and mood lift. (Although now I am wondering if this is because I almost always take NAC daily or if perhaps one of the 15 or so other supplements I take are preventing kratom uptake?)
The one thing that makes me think NAC might impede euphoria is that when I used to drink, I found that although NAC didn't block the effects of alcohol, it seemed to clear the alcohol out of my system a good deal faster (greatly reduced the time spent drunk and time spent hungover).
I think the half life of NAC is said to be around six hours? It definitely clears the body in less than 24 hour, but some sites say 8-to-10 hours and others say four-to-five.
Anyhow, I guess I could try only taking NAC at bedtime to see if that makes a difference (but I really enjoy the benefits of taking it twice a day).
Thanks!

I visited a long COVID clinic last week and they prescribed CoQ 10 and NAC. Its only been a few days so I have nothing to report. Just that it is used to treat the fatigue associated with long COVID.

Thanks, Boureka, I hope it helps you! Please keep us updated. What dosages of CoQ10 and NAC have they got you on? (I am taking 400mg CoQ10 and 1200mg NAC -- I used to take 800 CoQ10 and my night driving got much easier, but it's prohibitively expensive on my current budget).

When you go back to the clinic, you may want to also ask them about monolaurin. I have a friend with long COVID who swears by it, and I'm taking it for HSV reactivation (fingers crossed, it seems to be remission again).

l haven't heard that before. I have NAC but I won't open it - not yet anyway. I have with agmatine if I got the name right. Whenever the "potentiator" word comes up though - find out what it really means. It's not making kratom more potent. (I know this isn't a perfect answer, sorry) Many things that fall under that broad umbrella can enhance or diminish equally as well so it's like kratom: Condition dependent and it might involve more than one condition so this gets convoluted.

Well with pain killing qualities, focus and mood lift, I don't think I would be missing anything. I got that now & wasn't trying- been striking out alot this week. Ought to be sleeping. Depending on how bad I felt before, the combination might even give rise to a perception of euphoria. What is euphoria? - different things to different people. If it makes one ramble then I guess I have that. (nah) I dunno but breathing is good. Glad you're breathing. I've been having a hard time doing that since last Tue. Immune response can easily wipe the dose completely. Presently, If kratom happens to work well I end up sleeping although right now I'm numbish and wide awake at 2am. Lotta cat time in lately. What other trouble can one cat get into? (or what bag... out of) I have a bag of loose powder NAC and a capper device. This may have been a good time for it but It's still sealed bc I discovered it reduces blood clotting and I have a platelet disorder that has re-emerged after 18ys while being sick-ish so naturally I've been really itchy so I look like I've been in a knife fight or dragged down a gravel road. huh...the cat hasn't been shredding me lately. Considerate! Horrible week but ...when you are well, you know what to do. Try some days w/o and make note of observations. I experiment with many herbs & supps- all of them variable results that reveal conditions that pair w/ effects gradually so without notes (you remember less than you think- I promise) it is harder to pinpoint patterns and gain control over outcomes. If you haven't already, I hope you'll check to see that it's safe to use this for extended periods if that's what you're doing. Welp, that was a nice late night rambelo. Hope you're having a good day.

I jumped on the NAC train last year and boy did I love taking it! It made me feel so good and just happy all the time. Not to mention the immune support I got from it. However, I did notice my burns became nonexistent. I could not feel my kratom at all. I was taking the NAC three times a day though. 1000mg at a time. I've always heard that bigger doses with NAC are really key. Especially if you are currently sick. The hospital will administer NAC IV with an extremely high amount as its totally safe and beneficial in so many ways. After I stopped ingesting NAC it took at least a week for me to start feeling kratom again. I've known quite a few people who have had the same experience. It definitely mutes burns.

Unfortunately this became my experience too 😞

Was it a placebo effect because I kept hearing NAC effected the euphoria of kratom? Possibly. Either way I bought at 10 year supply of NAC when the FDA was threatening to ban it.

I too have a stash of NAC. I like to keep it around for when someone in my family gets sick. It's a miracle drug when it comes to boosting the immune system, and don't be afraid of taking too much. The more the better when you are sick or even starting to feel sick.

I'm curious if you cut back your NAC consumption and saw a difference in your burns?

Where do you get your NAC from? Powder or capsules? I started giving it to my mother once a day for COPD, 500mg capsules, and it's been about 2 weeks and she's starting to notice positive effects and improvement to her breathing

My burns (which were janky before) are no worse since I started taking NAC. I think my sleeping, however, has improved.

Nootropics Depo
I buy capsules, 500mg each. 180 count. Glad you are seeing improvements with your mother. It's truly an amazing compound in so many different ways!

I buy NAC in capsules -- I'm still taking 600 twice a day. Still unsure if it is impacting how Kratom feels.
I think there might be a correlation with kratom hitting harder when I skip a dose. I skipped my vitamins/supplements while staying at a relative's for Thanksgiving. When I got back home I took kratom as well as my vitamins/supplements and it seemed if anything to hit harder than usual, but perhaps abstaining NAC for 48 hours gave the kratom a head start?
(But ... I also tried a new strain from Benni's which might have been stronger than usual, plus, I was super-happy to be home. One of my relatives has a rage disorder and holidays are really trying).
Anyhow, in a few days when I am feeling less run down, I'll do a no-NAC trial and report back here.
For those who asked which NAC I use -- I buy a lot of loose powder herbs and supplements, but the price differential for NAC isn't much, so I buy capsules.
I am currently using two brands:
  • Nutricost NAC 600 Capsules -- pretty reasonable and good quality.
Doctor's Best "NAC Detox Regulators with Seleno-Excell" -- the latter capsules contain 600 mg NAC plus 50 mcg Molybdenum plus 50 mcg Selenium. I was running low and they were $5 for a bottle of 60 on Amazon. Supposedly the extra stuff is there to facilitate the extra glutathione produces using NAC as a building block? They seem fine too. Just be aware that any vitamins that contain Selenium SMELL like Selenium. I go through periods where that smell bothers me enough I'll skip taking vitamins altogether.
The cheapest brand of NAC in capsules is usually NOW foods. So far as potency goes it seems absolutely fine.
But the NOW capsules have a few little black spots when you open the bottle and the longer they hang around, the more black spots they get. NOW has had a ton of complaints about this (mine included) and they now state on their website this is harmless oxidation -- definitely not mold. Whatever. I have tried a ton of different brands and the NOW brand is the ONLY ONE that gets black spots.
I think someone in this thread mentioned they buy NAC as a bulk powder: does bulk NAC powder develop black/brown spots/speckles?
(I would think if loose powder doesn't oxidize to show black spots with age, there is definitely something amiss with the NOW brand).
