No Santa Claus

Post by Roscoe »

I hate to even bring it up but is anyone else a little down after you heard all the information about the strain names are mostly just marketing. I liked thinking that each strain came from Bali, Malaysia, Vietnam, etc, etc, and that is what made them so different. Oh I'm still enjoying the kratom but damn, no Santa Claus.

They need to be called red, gold, yellow, green or white and slow, mid-spectrum or fast. Oh, and Bentuangie. I think that covers about all the possibilities. What do you think? lol

The truth came to me when I found out kratom is illegal in Thailand. "Green Thai", "Yellow Thai", right...

Yes. Put colored stickers on the bag if they want and a speedometer decal showing the speed. Simple and we decide the rest.

Great idea. With the date as batch number, like RVA does.

There is rumor that the name, "Thai", is from trees that are harvested on the other (legal) side of the border.

Say it's not true!

Oh, the strain names? Not a problem for me.
I'm not down at all and I don't care that cyicism and negativity appears "smarter" to the average smart ass .

I got pretty annoyed with the vendor that injected his negative campaign about strain names into the minds of unprepared (not yet opinionated on the topic) masses.
Comments were flooding in. Naturally everyone in a group wants a piece of some escalating drama. That dish was skillfully prepared and timed perfectly.
It was "im hurt" run of the mill slander in a sense.

He was having problems managing inventory. Business was disrupted during the Gold Rush and he was stressed out, having been ruminating about this for a while. He was inferring (if not directly accusing) that his competition (and we don't know specifics here) was re / mis labeling product to cover for out of stock strains, thereby protecting their cash flow while he had to wait for replenishment to arrive.
Well, anyone who has worked for a variety of businesses, especially small businesses with less cross accountability, should not be surprised at this (does not mean that your vendor just did that to you). I've seen more than my share of shady, burnt out business owners that start losing control of things. It wasn't invented by the kratom industry I assure you.
Responding to social media driven, every following and changing consumer preferences might be near impossible. Not everyone has a budget to build a vast inventory, or the regularity of business to have everything on "auto-ship", especially if you can't stay open and keep your customers loyal. I understand his frustration but here's the deal..

He was not putting everything into context other than the one that was lighting fuses. He had a bitch to itch. Wow was that smear campaign effective! Here we are.

What does this have to do with strain names? Well it really doesn't, but making issue of this highlighted what he felt was important and a show of integrity.
Strain names / blend names with non-accurate location names are NOT A SECRET by the way.. and besides - if I dont know everything, neither do you.
Has anyone misrepresented something you said by leaving out a small detail that made all the difference. Knowing is NOT understanding.
Knowledge is power and it's being used to manipulate you all the time.

I thought everyone knew that regionally named blends are very likely to be just that- blends. Don't pressure sources to send only "non blends" It's not a deception!
Its fucking necessary to provide a product that doesn't suck! I learned before I even started using regularly (by searching multiple sources) some realities of strain names like Bali - are often, and I'd prefer it if it were.. a blended product with similar characteristics.
There will be those that fudge tradition however. You think providers of other goods & services state side don't switch things around for their convenience? Don't be naive.
Sorry this topic really heated me up then and now.

Here it is.. I stick to vendors that provide standard strains (among others) that are in line with what I expect. I don't have problems besides one is faster than another but I'm not buying a Mazda 626 or a standardized alkaloid and I don't want to.
I try new stuff sometimes- its worth it. Sometimes I don't go back. Is that hard? I for one do not want to buy "Yellow # B14" Cant' stand Bingo. Not patient enough.

I'm not picking on anyone here btw. Nice to have you all here at the dinner table.

I did not have the impression that this was some big cover up or scandal devised to deceive consumers- so all was good in my tree garden. But this "Silver" knew that the reddit fields was virgin soil, full of people in the background who relied on reddit as a sole source of information about kratom.

So the crowd was used. Nothing new but what happened next was shameful. Some turned "mob- within minutes -opening accounts at vendors who sold strains with unique names (which he found distasteful as I do sometimes- or to be a threat to his interests)- these soft minded dip shit lurkers on reddit picked up their torches and pitchforks and started threatening vendors who sold alternatively named products. Witch! Hairlip!! They can call it whatever they want and if it bothers me I don't have to buy it. Thats the reality- NOT a reason to report vendors to God knows who or to harass them etc
because THAT is what this led to and it happened in a matter of an hour.

Consensus. People are stupid. And they think "knowing" entitles them to cause damage when they don't even know the relative meaning of what they think they know- or that YouTube is not a source of accurate information. It's an ad farm designed to monetize peoples time an attention. But you knew that.

The "curse" side of the internet-.. People need to stop the lazy, drama thrill knee jerk reactions to news / implications spewed out wherever on the internet and elsewhere and remember that they are intelligent adults (as if) that are sitting in an audience, largely in "passive mode"- impressionable letting any old Johnny drop his seed into your.... well you get the idea.

Santa Clause does exist. He's the love of children and loving yourself enough to give yourself the experience of putting someone else happiness before your own.
outa here. bye -love don't ever change (bad advice, lol) :)

I gotta say I agree with most of what you say here, Transformato. I too don't think it was an effort to deceive, but I never saw any harm in a vendor naming their leaf whatever colorful name they want.

It's up to us as consumers to be educated anyway: beyond needing to know whether it's a red/white/green/bent or blend, there's not much else a name can tell us these days anyway.

In fact, in a discussion about this very thing -- started in fact by the person you mention, IIRC -- I said something to the effect that if maeng da is pimp grade in Thai, then I want to know what bitchslapped by skank ho is in Thai so I can name my own proprietary blend that.

I was under the impression that the farmers/suppliers did a lot of the naming of strains. Once the vendor has it I guess its up to him, its his product.

All I know is, I know for a fact I've had the same green strain under two different names recently and possibly a third as well.

For the most part I think the different names are fun as long as they have red, gold, yellow, green, or white in front of the fancy name. That way I have some idea of what I'm buying.

The ones that I find hilarious are the strains named after the farmer's wives, like Agatha. Red Agatha, green Agatha, Agatha has different moods :D

The names are just creative marketing in most cases. There are definitely colored strains though - red, green, white, yellow, gold.

Personally I find the most enjoyable kratom to be Red Cthulhu, it is kratom prepared by the ocean using a special altar with the blood of virgins and a dash of sea salt. It is said the old gods personally bless each and every batch. Ph'nglui mglw'nafh Cthulhu R'lyeh wgah'nagl fhtagn.

Lovecraft? Definitely cool, and definitely much higher minded than myself.

All I could think was that whoever spoke this needs to go ahead and hawk up that loogie already.

Yes, it's HP Lovecraft. I love Lovecraftian horror, which is basically "horror of the unknown and potentially unknowable". There's more to it than that and that's the simple definition, but Lovecraft's themes are seen often in many modern day horror movies/books/games/etc.

I've always wanted to read some Lovecraft. Not sure why I haven't. Any recommendations for a newbie?

Here's an archive of his work: http://www.hplovecraft.com/writings/texts/

A lot of those are short stories, so easy to read to see if you like the style.

There's a fairly good wiki here: http://lovecraft.wikia.com/wiki/Main_Page

If you're a gamer, some Lovecraftian games that I've personally played and recommend are Amnesia: The Dark Descent, SOMA, The Last Door 1, and The Last Door 2.

Huh, how about that. I was a huge fan of Poe and even Shirley Jackson back in the day so I'd probably dig it; for whatever reason I missed reading any Lovecraft at all. You make him sound like the Hitchcock of horror fiction. :D

I know you recommended his short stories, but do you have a specific work that you think is representative or a good place to start? If it's a short story I can't go wrong, but there are a few too many choices, heh.

Shirley Jackson! I first read The Haunting of Hill House when I was maybe 9 or 10 years old and I still read it occasionally. I have exactly 6 DVDs in my movie collection and one of them is the old black-and-white version of The Haunting.

Also, if I had to recommend just one Lovecraft story I'd say read The Dunwich Horror.

Well I messed this one up I meant to quote your post not my own. I'm not even going to go back to try to fix this. lol

Oh, and the B&W movie version of The Haunting? I should go back and watch that again -- I'm a huge Vincent Price fan. Or maybe just a cheese fan, heh.
