Re: The best song Ever recorded?
Hard to narrow it down to one song. For serious music, I go by albums because I feel like the artist intends it to be all one piece when they release it. Even going back to the classical period. You don't read just one chapter of a book right?
For me it's between Beatles- rubber soul and Beach boys - pet sounds
Of course there are songs that are meant to stand alone, most pop music is usually single oriented. And these days, it's all about the mp3 and Spotify sales

Any genre? I'll toss some Gershwin into the mix.

This is the singer from Second Coming covering junkhead by Alice n Chains. He does it better than aic current singer and this has gotta be the most difficult aic song to cover vocally.

Re: The best song Ever recorded?
yeah Louie Louie, clearly the greatest song ever recorded with 100's of bands cover the song and entire books written about it.....CatfatherB wrote:I always liked Motorhead's version!!
- Song was Banned on radio stations across the USA
- Banned for dirty lyrics, but nobody could tell, exactly what the singer was saying...
- Has elements of Rock, Blues, Jazz, Country, all in 1 song
Growing up in Portland, I met Jack Ely (original vocals on The Kingsmen, Louie Louie) and I dated his ex-wife, we had all the Kingsmen records.
The greatness of the song, is that nobody knows the exact WORDS, so every singer is free to improvise lyrics... I'd say Iggy Pop is known for maybe the dirtiest lyric version, back in the 70's, but he always performs and changes the song lol

Re: The best song Ever recorded?
Ballz that's pretty interesting.
As far as the obscene lyrics, that's a joke! It's almost as though they were inviting people to write their own obscene lyrics, huh?
I knew the part about it being banned from the radio, but what, exactly, did.the banners THINK the singer was saying to ban it outright like that? I mean, those were CERTAINLY different times and obscene then is soft rock today so who knows. Thanks for sharing.this.

There are about 5 000,000 songs I would call "best song in the world" on any given day. Today? "Radio Free Europe" by REM. Fall is coming on, and that means its REM time of year (all of their albums up to Document, that is.) In the summertime, I could take or leave them, but in the fall it takes me right back to being a kid and moving to an apartment in the city. In those days, smoking pot equated to a game to play when walking. Good times!

I always have to listen to Unwound's Leaves Turn Inside You at the beginning of fall. It's like I'm back in 2003.
The best song on the album, "October All Over". Really good for dark, rainy fall days

I don’t know why but with your name and the title I read the post as “best fart ever recorded” and now I’m disappointed.

There’s so many songs that I love dearly, but I believe that the best song ever made has to be Summer’s Cauldron/Grass by XTC. Although technically two songs, they were supposed to be one. It’s so seamless and psychedelic.

Re: The best song Ever recorded?
The only XTC album I've heard is their mid 80s side project Dukes of Stratosphear, but I really like it. They did a great job recreating the 1967 psychedelic rock sound...and one hell of a bass player.daydreamerinwords wrote:There’s so many songs that I love dearly, but I believe that the best song ever made has to be Summer’s Cauldron/Grass by XTC. Re: The best song Ever recorded?
Music being such a question of personal taste, it's hard to find something universally loved except maybe from a group like the Beatles' "Let it Be" or something like that. I concur with the rest of you about Louie Louie, which is such an easy song to sing the chorus to with a bunch of eniebriated friends. Me being a deadhead, I might be tempted to declare "Eyes of the World" or "Morning Dew" as the best songs, but I realize that my "best" song really depends on my mood and a bunch of other subjective and obective details. Do you know what I mean?

Re: The best song Ever recorded?
I love REM and you're right. I never thought of this before. Fall always makes me melancholy and so do many REM songs. Fall is my favorite season and I love the feeling it gives me. My oldest daughter, same thing. We spend the fall finding and sending each other sad music. Here's one she sent me a few years ago and I still haven't topped it yet.mivanqua wrote:There are about 5 000,000 songs I would call "best song in the world" on any given day. Today? I may have gotten close this year though. Someone posted about this guy at another forum I go to one day. Found this on Youtube and oh my gosh, the music is so sad.

There's no way I could pick out just one 'best song', there are too many.

Re: The best song Ever recorded?
I've been jamming some Miles Davis early 70s jazz Rock stuff. On the Corner, Jack Johnson, and that immortal Bitches Brew.
Don't get me wrong I love some blue note 50s Miles Davis but that mid-to-late sixties experimental stuff with John Coltrane and Ornette Coleman and all those guys just pure genius. (Lest us not forget Mingus and Monk.)
Come to think of it it's hard to figure out a best song ever recorded. I think of one band 1 jonra and then I think of a million different bands in a million different genres. I don't even translate these into the top 100,000s. My desert island discs better have a briefcase full of memory sticks.

Out of all the genres I’ve ever listened to...from classic rock, to fusion jazz all the way to hip hop, it’s almost impossible to narrow down to one. If I absolutely had to pick a perfect song, I might point to “God only knows” by The Beach Boys.

South of the Sky by Yes, Live at Montreux. John McLaughlin is my only "must buy" artist. I've bought most everything by him on a variety of formats over the years. Let Us Go Into the House of the Lord, performed with Santana is amazing.
