Help for Noobs/Lurkers?
Is it possible to put a sticky up for these people? The same questions are being asked numerous times, and nobody is searching the existing threads.
I'm sure I'm just getting annoyed because of, well, everything, but it sucks when I see there's new activity, and it's just "who's the best vendor" or "how do I order from TFH?"

Re: Help for Noobs/Lurkers?
when kratom boomed in 2018, Reddit was flooded with n00bs and members sky-rocketed... mid August 2017 r/kratom was 10K [LINK] and 3 years later... over 97,000Jestrice2002 wrote:The same questions are being asked numerous times, and nobody is searching the existing threads.
Anyway "Use the Search Bar" became a common Reply. But, some thought it was rude to suggest that??
For some reason, new Members feel obligated to post "Who are the best vendors" ? The answer is: Vendor List https://saidit.net/s/KratomVendors/
Banned on Reddit: KratomVendors is now on SAIDIT!

Well, it sucks. Every time I've got a decent group, full of other experienced group members, it eventually gets flooded with puerile who will ask these kinds of questions repeatedly, or they'll want to know the difference between strain colors, etc It's the people who don't respect people enough to put a little work in before just clogging a forum, and they don't usually participate beyond that. I try to show respect to the existing members in a small group.BallzDeep9 wrote:when kratom boomed in 2018, Reddit was flooded with n00bs and members sky-rocketed... mid August 2017 r/kratom was 10K [LINK] and 3 years later... over 97,000Jestrice2002 wrote:The same questions are being asked numerous times, and nobody is searching the existing threads.![]()

I used to be so nice and helpful, but it just never ends. I'm tired, lol.

I try to be helpful and tell em' how to find the information they're looking for, it was the same way in reddit but questions like "most euphoric vendor" I'll just not answer something like that.. just stick around, you'll get used to it.. it's unstoppable. Id rather it be like it is than to close double M and have it be a private group.. Always remember.. we were all noobs once, I'll help noobs the same way "the vets" helped me when I was a noob on reddit.

I feel your pain op. Most forums don't tolerate it. This place is more noob friendly and welcoming, which is cool. I'm learning to just skip over those types of threads. It's annoying at first but not a big deal. I'll take this over the daily poop/hair loss threads on r/kratom.

Re: Help for Noobs/Lurkers?
thinking a couple of things.
1) there will always be new people who need to learn. and I 100% agree with catfather about passing on to others what was so graciously given to me. it does require patience, but I wish I had had someone to help me out in the beginning so I didn't spend months fumbling around, when I could have found even better relief much sooner. I've given new people two-week crash courses covering a year's worth of intense personal research and education. lucky! I always tell them I'm still learning and always will be. I wish I would have asked for more help in the beginning, instead of lurking and quietly soaking in all the knowledge. it would have saved me in a lot of ways,
2) perception is everything. what looks to others to be someone new... like me who officially joined in april after reading and learning in this forum for almost a year (aka lurking... might not be such a bad thing after all), or someone who joined in may, didn't participate until june, but has been 'around' for years... may not be new at all, but, depending on where each particular person is in their journey determines who they may or may not perceive as new. I'm sure some veterans might consider anyone who became official within the last year as 'new.' it's only with a little time and observation that we can determine a person's level of experience and know where to meet them when offering help. someone who's been around for a while may perceive a very good question as 'common knowledge'... only because of their own personal, in-depth, experience.
and
3) these points in mind, I think it probably would be a good idea to pin some of the most basic questions. this could be helpful to new people (assuming they know how to look for said basic information) and also in preventing frustration in veteran members who aren't feeling it at the moment lol. personally, I've recently helped 4 or 5 new people, in depth, and I said it'll be a while before I take that on again. takes a lot of time and effort... but I know they are grateful for the help. so that makes it worth it to me.

Yes, we all started somewhere, and I was very grateful to have found you guys. I guess it just feels disrespectful to you guys to continue to ask the same things, or bring in the verbiage that hurts the whole kratom community. I was hoping that pointing out the search bar would get people to do a little work.CatfatherB wrote:

As long as it doesn't get as bad as other forums or Facebook groups, I guess I can't really complain. There's actual substance here. It's nice to have something other than all of the beginner talk. That's what reddit is for, now.

Starshine, I love your points. Maybe even another category for the basic info/questions. That would help those starting out, and avoid others burning out on the extensive teachings. That would give people an easy way to do their own research.
I'm trying to be patient; I've been helping people get acquainted with kratom for 8 years, now. I don't mind that at all. I just wish all the previous education was used by more.

Re: Help for Noobs/Lurkers?
Total noob here,
Just want to point out that the search box in this forum only appears in the upper right hand corner and on mobile it is really small and hard to notice.
In a lot of other forums, there is a search field in each sub forum and it is more prominent.
I knew it had to exist so I simply searched for "search" in my browser "search within pagex which is only what all noobs should do.
Still, it might be worth tweaking the code so that search box stands out a little better.
Coders tend to be young and see better than a lot of the members in their target market.
PS: first day here, loving it, thanks to you all!
can't believe it took me till today to stumble in!

Re: Help for Noobs/Lurkers?
What made you stumble in Brassy? Me? I was a bit bored (quarantine, ya know) and out of avoiding a fight with my gal (love of my life) decided to see how far the internet has come by way of procuring drugs, I remember in the 90s this being more of an in person search. Anyway, long ass story short - like anyone with any interest outside of the regular, I ended on r/kratomm and many other threads. The Reddit board is filled with knowledgeable and good people. I noticed that many of the best threads led to this forum. It turns out that this is where all of the more established community heads are and they do not seem to mind sharing and being all around genuine peeps.

Re: Help for Noobs/Lurkers?
Well thanks for the warm welcome, Love, and to the rest of you guys!
I stumbled in. I noticed in the Reddit Kratom forum that when I would post, sometimes there was a delay before approval, even though my posts are always tame.
I found Saidit and Saidit sent me here.
After lurking for only a few minutes I knew this forum was a "keeper". Really friendly well informed vibe. A nice sense of community.
It's surprising I didn't land here sooner.
I have always (since the 1980s) participated in nootropic and herbal forums ... since tearly Lycaeum and Erowid, really... old school books like Durk & Sandy Pierson's Life Extension and Ward Dean's Better Sex through chemistry influenced me back then. Of the newer forums, I like Longecity, but I expect I'll be dropping in lots, so thanks for having me!
Like you, I need the company!
I had chronic health issues which resulted in being unfit for work and let poverty isolate me way more than I should have. I was ashamed and felt excruciately uncomfortable when friends would try to pay for me in social situations, pre-COVID. It was a mistake to push everybody away, but I felt I wasn't bringing enough to the table. Stupid pride.
Anyhow, I'm over it -- resolved to find ways to re-engage when (if) social distancing ends. Humanist do-gooder groups. Unitarian Church. Wherever I can be a contributing member of the community.

Re: Help for Noobs/Lurkers?
We used to have a very well written and informational FAQ for new users. But, it was authored by a mod who decided to take it with him when he left. He did give me the full rights to it via email, but then later said if I tried to use it he would sue me for copyright lol. Even though I'm probably well within my rights to use it based on the email I saved of him giving me full rights (and I really doubt he actually copyrighted it in the first place), I'd rather just avoid the whole situation. So we took it down.
Perhaps it's time for a new one.

Re: Help for Noobs/Lurkers?
i think an FAQ would save on a lot of repetitive thread, FAQ could even direct link to the more informative threads on whatever subjects are being covered.
Maybe raise the question on a new thread about issues users here think should be tackled. Tolerance, vendors, strain v batch, headshops, AKA, serving size, tips+tricks, other herbs, 'whats best', etc.....it would be great for users to decide what actually are the most frequently asked questions or like....super novice info to get people on the same level.
writing it could be outsourced or multi-edited via a shared google doc. lot of people have different ideas so a collective sort of trying to make it the most unbiased, broad strokes info possible would be helpful. Tolerance info from someone who takes 1g a day might not help someone who is septupling that thrice daily. I think it would be helpful going forward as more and more people join.

I'll bring it up in Suggestions. I know they said that one of their old mods took and and refused to share, but it's be willing to help write it out for them, for sure. It would save a lot of time for some (and patience, for others). We'd just have to encourage people to use it - when they don't use current threads or the search bar...

would be nice to just have a default link to drop in those posts from newbies.
"whats a good vendor? my smoke shop only sells choice and it doesnt work for me" ...instert FAQ link
"whats hirsuta? how do I use agmatine?" "What do the names of ____ strain mean?" insert faq. having a new one re-written imo would just be a generally useful tool. and community-written info isnt something that one person would be able to claim ownership of and for some reason, steal away.
